Eu não sou nenhum grande contador de piadas, talvez porque eu nunca me lembre delas, mesmo as que me fizeram rir muito.  Entre as poucas que formam o meu repertório – não se preocupe que não vou inventar de contá-la aqui agora – está uma que se passa em um navio à beira do naufrágio e uma personagem grita apelando para que se salvem primeiro mulheres e crianças. Mas quem precisa de uma piada dessas quando a tragicomicidade do mundo atual nos prova o quanto tal apelo humanitário em momento de desespero é patético?

Não faz parte do DNA do ser humano salvar a pele de quem quer seja quando sente que a sua própria está em perigo. É ilusão esperar que ele traia sua natureza humana em prol de valores e princípios colocados tão acima dele mesmo, que se tornam inantingíveis. A possibilidade de uma ou outra exceção a essa regra não me interessa porque não é relevante para ver a sociedade como um todo e porque os exemplos notáveis ao longo da história tampouco foram capazes de corrigir esse aspecto do ser humano. Talvez por instinto de sobrevivência seja mais natural para a sociedade agir por egoísmo. E é exatamente em momentos de crise, na hora que o barco está afundando, que a sociedade dá provas disso.

 

 

Há anos o barco vem afundando no mundo todo e o grito de salve-se quem puder nem precisou soar. O conhecimento de que a crise é global não parece ter efeito algum sobre uma civilização que se nega a erguer um pouquinho os olhos para ver mais que os limites do mundo à sua volta e continua acreditando na urgência de sua própria salvação. Custe o que custar… para os outros.

Tem sido um golpe duro acompanhar a divisão da sociedade em países como o Brasil, os Estado Unidos e a Áustria. Nesses três países, discursos falso moralistas têm conseguido o apoio de uma boa metade da população. No Brasil por uma lado ela apóia uma movimentação política que reitera exatamente a destruição dos valores que ela diz querer preservar. Já nos Estados Unidos e na Áustria processos mais legítimos, dentro da legalidade e da democracia, quase levam ao governo candidatos que também brincam com o medo de naufrágio dos povos de seus países e oferecem alimento ao egoísmo natural do ser humano como última tábua de salvação.

 

Esse “quase”, no caso da Áustria já ficou para trás: no domingo, dia 22 de maio, o povo austríaco deixou de eleger o egoísmo optando – com margem apertada de 1% – por valores e princípios defendidos com transparência (palavra que a política brasileira ainda não conhece) ao longo de 40 anos por um dos maiores expoentes de qualquer Partido Verde no mundo: o professor e economista Alexander van der Bellen ou, no Instagram, @vanderbellen2016, eleito novo presidente do país.

Só me resta desejar a ele a força necessária para não deixar seu governo se fragilizar por uma vitória tão apertada e, mais que isso, reunificar a sociedade austríaca em torno de valores mais dignos que a pura salvação da própria pele. Para que ele não seja simplesmente uma “sorte regional” mas um exemplo para todas as outras sociedades  de que ainda vale a pena (e não é só uma ilusão) lutar por valores muito acima do oportunismo e do desespero.

I am not any great joke teller, probably because I never remember them, not even those that made me laugh a lot. Among the few ones that make my repertoire – don’t worry, I will not tell it now – there is one about a sinking ship in which a character cries appealing that women and children mus be saved first. But who needs such a joke when our tragicomical current world demonstrates such a humanitarian appeal in momenst of dispair to be just pathetical?

It is not in human’s DNA to save someone’s skin when he feels that his own is in danger. It is an illusion to expect that he will betray his human nature for the sake of values and principles placed so far above himself becoming unachievable. The possibility of one or other exception to this rule doesn’t interest me here since they are not relevant to look at society as a whole and because neither the remarkable examples of it throughout history were able to transform this aspect of human being. Maybe it is just natural for society to be driven by selfishness due to survival instinct. And it is exactly in periods of crisis, when the ship is sinking, that society proves us that.

Since years the ship has been sinking all around the world and the scream to run for your own lives didn’t even have to be pronounced. The knowledge that the crisis is global seems not to have any effect over a civilization that refuses to lift a little bit it eyes to see further than the limits of the world around irself and goes on believing in the urgency of its own salvation.  Whatever the costs are… for the others.

It has been such a hard blow to watch the division of society in countries such as Brazil, the United States and Austria. In these three countries false moralist’s speeches have managed to conqueer the support ot a good half of the population. In Brazil at one side it supports a political move that reiterates exactly the destruction of those values that it allegedly wants to preserve. In the other hand, in the United States and Austria, more legitimate processes, kept whitin legality and democracy, almost bring to the government candidates who also play around with the fear of sinking of their country’s people and  feed their natural selfishness as human beings as the last board of salvation.

That “almost”, in the case of Austria, belongs to the past: on sunday, May, 22nd, austrian people failed to elect selfishness opting  – with a tight margin of only 1% –  for values and principles defended with transparency (a word brazilian politics still doesn’t know) throughout the last 40 years by one of the most remarkable exponents od any Green Party around the world: professor and economist Alexander van der Bellen or, at Instagram, @vanderbellen2016, elected the new President of the country.

I can only wish him the strenght needed to not let his government weaken by such a tight victory and, more than that, reunify austrian society around more worthy values than the salvation of its own skin. So that he is not simply a “regional luck” but an example for all other societies that it is still worthwhile (and not just an illusion) to fight for values that are much higher than opportunism and despair.
