A Universidade de Viena é uma das mais antigas do mundo, foi fundada em 1365 com o nome em latim Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis (… hmmmm… Muito prazer… o meu é  Marcelo!). Em comparação com a data de fundação, seu prédio atual até que pode ser considerado bem moderno… foi construído entre 1877 e 1884 pelo arquiteto Heinrich von Ferstel no estilo da Alta Renascença italiana.

Esse prédio é chamado de Universidade “principal” mas existem departamentos espalhados em vários outros lugares dos quais o mais famoso é o campus do antigo Hospital Geral de Viena, bem ali pertinho. Pra se ter uma idéia como essa Universidade cresceu com o passsar do tempo (bom… são 651 anos!!), o prédio medieval do centro da cidade onde a Universidade começou a funcionar, hoje só comporta o seu arquivo!

Hoje, 93.000 estudantes estão inscritos na Universidade, divididos entre 15 faculdades e 4 centros de estudo. Na Áustria, qualquer pessoa com segundo grau completo tem direito a se inscrever na Universidade. A altíssima qualidade dos cursos e a garantia da gratuidade sempre foram prioridade para o governo do país que é liderado pelo partido socialista desde 1945. Aliás, não é exato falar em gratuidade… o “bolsa educação” aqui é dado a todas as crianças e jovens em idade escolar ou universitária até 27 anos de idade! A atenção especial às áreas sociais garantem a qualidade de vida que faz de Viena a metrópole número 1 do mundo.

Vienna’s University is one of the oldest in the whole world. It was founded in 1365 under the latin name Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis (… hmmmm Nice to meet you… mine is Marcelo!). Compared with its foundation, the current building of the University may even be considered quite modern… is was built between 1877 and 1884 by architect Heinrich von Ferstel in Italian High Renaissance style.

The building is called the “main” University but there are other departments in many diferent places. The most famous of them is the campus at the old General Hospital of Vienna. Both are actually quite close to each other. Just to imagine how much this University has grown up along time (well… 651 years!), the medieval building in the center of the ciry that was used in the beginning of the University nowadays only bears its  archive!

Today, 93.000 students are registered in the University. They are spread in 15 faculties and 4 centers. In Austria, everybody who finishes normal school has the right to register in the University. The high quality of studies and the warranty of gratuity has always been priority for the government whose leadership is in hands of the socialists since 1945. Actually it’s not accurate to speak only about gratuity… they give a kind of “education aid” to any child and young in scholar or universitary age until 27 years old! The special attention given to social subjects and life quality makes Vienna the 1st metropolis of the world in that regard.
