Grinzing é o nome do bairro vienense dedicado tradicionalmente à produção de vinho. Desde o século 19, os vinhos produzidos na região são comercializados ali mesmo, e criou-se o hábito de levar um lanchinho para acompanhar o vinho que se bebia diretamente nas fazendinhas dos produtores.

Com o tempo, as fazendinhas passaram a vender também os lanches dando início à tradição que virou a marca registrada de Grinzing, os restaurantes onde a principal atração é o vinho jovem, produzido na última estação. O vinho jovem é chamada de Heurige (de hoje) e assim também foram batizados os restaurantes onde esse tipo de vinho é vendido.

Antes de se tornar um bairro de Viena e o principal polo de turismo da cidade ligado aos vinhos, Grinzing era uma vilazinha independente, encravada nas colinas dos famosos bosques de Viena, onde se caçavam porcos selvagens. O documento mais antigo onde já aparece o nome da vila data de 1114 e a igreja na praça central do bairro foi fundada em 1426.

Um dos meus passeios favoritos é subir ao morro Kahlenberg, de onde se tem uma vista maravilhosa sobre toda a cidade de Viena e o Rio Danúbio e depois descer tudo a pé, vendo as antigas casinhas de fazenda, cada uma com sua plantação de vinho, até chegar ao antigo centro de Grinzing, onde a pequena estação de trem atualmente é utilizada para pegar o bonde que leva de volta ao centro da cidade.

Grinzing is the name of a Viennese neighbourhood traditionally dedicated to wine production. Since the 19th. century the wine produced in this region is sold there and people of the city have become accustumed to bring some snacks with them to eat with the wine they drunk directly in the little farm houses of the producers.

With time, the farmes started selling the snacks themselves and that gave birth to the actual tradition that is like a brandmark of Grinzing: the restaurants where the main attraction is the young wine, produced in the last season. The young wine is called Heurige (from today) and so were baptized the restaurants where this kind of wine is sold.

Much before belonging to the city of Vienna as the most important wine tourism center of the region, Grinzing was an independent small village, nestled in the hills of the famous Vienna Woods, where people used to go hunting wild hogs. The oldest document with the name of the village dates 114 and the church at the main square was founded in 1426.

One of my favorite walks is to climb the hill called Kahlenberg where you have a wonderful view over Vienna and the Danube River and then go down on foot, watching the old farmer’s houses, each one with its wine plantation, until getting to the old center of Grinzing, where the little train station became the place where you take the tram back to center of Vienna.
