Hahaha Não, não, não! Eu estou no Brasil mesmo e essa é uma pracinha da minha cidade natal, Tupã, no interior do Estado de São Paulo, mais de 500 km da capital.

 

Muitas pessoas não entendem a predileção absoluta que um brasileiro que mora na Áustria, toca Mozart ao piano e fala alemão tem pela cultura japonesa! O susto que elas levam quando eu conto que aprendi japonês quando era criança é tão grande quanto o de quem achou que a foto foi tirada no Japão ao saber que o lugar é brasileiríssimo.

Chamada de Praça do Centenário, os 100 anos que ela comemora são da imigração japonesa no Brasil, reunindo em sua arquitetura e paisagismo elementos típicos da cultura japonesa. E não é a primeira vez que a cidade homenageia esse grupo de habitantes que tanto influenciou a região toda: vinte anos antes, foi erguido um obelisco que na época festejava os 80 anos da imigração e hoje integra o conjunto da praça.

 

O convívio com a comunidade japonesa quando criança foi um dos fatores mais enriquecedores na minha formação: sou parte de uma geração que cresceu beneficiando-se daquilo que somente muito mais tarde se convencionou chamar de “diversidade cultural”. Se eu tivesse crescido num país que fecha suas portas aos imigrantes – como muitos hoje querem fazer em relação aos que necessitam de refúgio – provavelmente não teria tido a coragem de me aventurar por terras estranhas, aprender novas línguas e carregar pelo mundo um pouquinho de informação sobre o lugar em que eu mesmo nasci.

Many people do not understand the absolute predilection that a Brazilian who lives in Austria, plays Mozar at the piano and speaks German has for the Japanese culture! The fright they get when I tell I learned Japanese as a child is just as big as from those who thought these pictures were taken in Japan and get to know the place is fully Brazilian.

Named as Centenary Square, the 100 years it celebrates refer to Japanese imigration in Brazil, displaying both in its architecture and landscaping typical elements of Japanese culture. And this is not the first time the city honors this group of habitants that had such a strong influence over the region: twenty years before, an obelisk was built to celebrate 80 years of imigration and today it is integrated in the square’s architecture.

Living together with Japanese community as a child was one of the most enriching factors in my education: I belong to a generation that was raised under the benefits of something that only much later became the name of “cultural diversity”. If I were raised in a country that closes its doors to immigrants – like many nowadays want to do against those who need refuge -I would probably not have had the courage to venture into foregin lands, to learn new languages and carry a little bit of information about my own culture.
