Townhouse was originally the name given to London residencies of the aristocracy who, in the major part of the year, lived in the countryside. They would stay in London for the so called social season, the time of the year with balls in the city that gathered together the high society of the United Kingdom.
Townhouses occupied a small footprint but offered a huge living area due to its multiple floors, divided in social area (ground floor and first floors), intimate area (upper floors) and working area (underground). Servants lived under the roof. The townhouses were terraced, only a few were detached by gardens. Along time they gave rise to the rowhouses. The townhouses became popular not only in England but also in all Europe and its colonies in North America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
Nowadays, many of these houses were adapted and divided in apartments but there are some original examples that were preserved like the famous Brooklyn Embassy that impresses by the beauty of its stained glass windows, carved woodwork and hand-painted walls.
