English below!
How could Van Gogh be without yellow? Without the sun, without sunflowers, without piles of dry hay in the fields or the yellow walls of his house in Arles? According to another painter, Eugéne Delacroix, yellow brings a notion of joy and wealth and so the symbolism of this colour grows connected with the sun, the light, life, even friendship and optimism.
Despite that, there is in portuguese an expression with a totally contrary meaning… a “yellow smile” does not mean all that sunny happyness. In this phrase, yellow stands for faded, uninteresting, embarrassed, shy. Something like the memory of wealth that remained lost in the past, such as the gold that lost its shine, reduced to a colour without personality, to a colour that as soon as combined with any other, changes drammatically its meaning and can be seen both as a relaxed joy (in the combination with white) or as the tension of danger, besides black. Who is to blame? Some say… the butt of bees!!
Perhaps because it is the most dubious and volatile colour, the one that only needs a drop of blue to become green or orange whith a drop of red, yellow is also the colour that symbolizes betrayal and envy. Historically, it has also been perfect to deceive. It left an entire folk – who was used to poverty – think it would symbolize the wealth of their nation while, in fact, it simply flaunted the power of a royal house who dominated them (together with the green of the royals who bought its hand for marriage). And so the colour yellow goes on, even today, being used to manipulate the noblest aspirations of a folk by those whom that same folk got used to watch taking profits of a wealth that remained denyed to themselves… since the foundations of the impire were laid!
